needed to read this right now. Loved this, especially the idea that the world and story keep shaping each other as you go. The Dragonspine vs. Ekhypso examples made that contrast really click. Also, scale ≠ focus is such a good reminder. super reassuring.
Love seeing all the different version change and grow! I'm constantly playing with mine but the shape is something I'm struggling with. I have a rough idea of what is where, so I just go off vibes for that for now lol. I need to do a zoom in, but then I'm going to have to think of more place names 😆
I’m helping my writing partner with a map for their book, and we’re currently at the phase of “sketched out blobs to vaguely get the direction of everything” so the vibes phase is entirely valid. Place names kill me!! My manuscript still has (NAMETOWN) placeholders. Some of them I’m going to be forced to slap a name on for the serial which might kick me into getting more of it done haha
I drew them in ProCreate!! I liked the colors I used with the dnd ones so I keep using them, but I bought a mapmaking brush set on Etsy that I’ve used since (it works for Photoshop and Affinity too if you don’t use ProCreate!)

I’m so glad it helped!! All things I have to remind myself of sometimes, too.

BLOBS 🤣
What are you using to draw your maps in? I really like the style of them.

Solid and Informative post! I don’t have time to read it all right now but it’s saved for later!
Thanks for checking it out!!
